A MESSAGE TO STARS MEMBERS FROM CAROLYN COLLING

Dear STARS member.
I have been the chair of STARS since 2007 taking over from Olive Reader after she passed away. Prior to that I had been a member of the committee since 2001. It has been a pleasure to be able to present some beautiful music, art, workshops and opera over these years, firstly at Waverley Homestead and then over the last 3 years in the Willunga Rec Park halls.
Things were simple in the early days as there were very few arts events available in our region but now every council has a large arts component to offer with programmes that include all of the events that STARS has been presenting over the years – all at an affordable price due to the arts budget that they are able to spend. Onkaparinga council has its headquarters at Port Noarlunga where there are art shows, operas, ballet and classical music as well as popular concerts. Of course, there is the Hopgood Theatre where many great events are held with country arts backing.
Our loyal membership is spoiled for choice and there are only enough dollars to go round as our events must have a realistic ticket price. I am very proud of the entertainment that we have offered in council owned Waverley Homestead and latterly in the Rec Park halls, particularly the operas, jazz orchestra and then the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Youth Orchestra, both held in the huge stadium at Tatachilla Lutheran College over the last four years.
It has been my pleasure to be involved with so many wonderful artists and organisations and I hope to continue to work with some of them as a volunteer in the future. I will be involved with the Big Sing and other musical events and hope to continue with the Musica Viva Equal Music in local low-advantaged schools, as well as the Fleurieu Biennale and Cinemallunga, who always need volunteers.
I am privileged to have worked with so many wonderful STARS volunteers, particularly in the Keith Michell / Helpmann Awards, then Stars of Waverley Awards, where we presented a financial reward to emerging artists in music, theatre, dance and visual arts.
I will be resigning from the position of chair of STARS at the AGM in March, but wish to thank all of the committee members, who have become my very good friends, for the support and dedication they have shown me. It is my understanding that the present committee will not be seeking re-election. If anyone would like to nominate for the position please contact me prior to our AGM on Friday 15th of March 6.00 pm in the supper room behind the stage at the Show Hall. In the event that there is no-one willing to take over the running of STARS, we propose to cease operating and dispose of our funds and assets in accord with our constitution.
